This presentation will show how autosomal DNA matching provided the breakthrough moment in three cases, opening the door to discovering rich family history in their homeland.
The Minnesota Genealogy Center is located at 1385 Mendota Heights Road, Mendota Heights, MN. Registration is $30 In-person and $25 via livestream. Register below or using meeting flyer.

Michael Lacopo: Using Mitochondrial DNA in Solving a Pennsylvania German Case
8:00 pm to 9:15 pm Central Time Online (English)
Have you ever wondered how you can use mitochondrial DNA (maternal line) to answer research questions?
Michael will focus on the practical usage of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in advanced genealogical problem solving. His case study approach reveals the previously unknown surname of one of his female ancestors by utilizing cluster genealogical research (“FAN Club”) and identifying a potential cluster of sisters. This hypothesis is proven in a powerful demonstration of mtDNA’s possibilities when combined with genealogical research.
Although the basic biology will be covered, this is not “a DNA class.” It is about the practical and successful marriage of genetic genealogy and thorough conventional research. Meeting Flyer

8:00 pm to 9:30 pm
Gail Blankenau is a nationally known German genealogy speaker. She has spoken at 2 International German Genealogy Conferences.
As genealogists, we often focus first on surnames in our research. Yet, it does not take long to encounter same-name candidates for our family trees. Furthermore, many Germans had multiple given names—and may not use their first given name, instead use another one as a “Rufname” which means "name one goes by". Adding to the mix are nicknames and name variants. Gail Blankenau will explore these naming problems and how you can navigate them to ensure you are indeed, barking up the right tree!

“The Pursuit of Happiness and the Migration Experience: Faith, Land and Hope"
From the colonial days in the 18th century to the Displaced People after World War II immigrants to America millions were driven by individual motives on their journey to a new land. The American Declaration of Independence put in writing what was unknown in Germany’s feudal society, but nevertheless inspired the hope of millions: the pursuit of happiness.
The lecture presents a timeline of the German American migration experience and focuses on living conditions along with social, political and economic patterns in autobiographical studies: from Franz Daniel Pastorius and the passengers of the CONCORDE in Germantown PA in 1683 – also named the German MAYFLOWER - to the land-seekers in the 19th century to the German neighborhood delis, shops and work places in the 1920s and 50s.

December is the month when one thinks about gold, frankincense and myrrh. Derived from tree sap, or a milky white gum resin, frankincense is prized for its alluring fragrance. Germans often think of another resin treasure, amber, which washes up onto the Baltic shorelines. Come to the meeting to hear how this fossilized tree resin has been appreciated for its color and natural beauty since Neolithic times. Janet Mitchell will tell us all about this gemstone in her presentation: "Amber - A Prehistoric Pine Tree's Gift to the World." She will bring her amber jewelry collection so people can see the various colors and inclusions in person. If you have one, wear your amber necklace to the meeting. |

8:30 am to 4:00 pm Normandale Community College, 9700 France Avenue South, Bloomington , MN
Meeting will be located in Normandale’s Fine Arts Building-Lorenz Auditorium, room number F1265.
We are pleased to welcome Teresa Steinkamp-McMillin to be our speaker. This meeting will be a full day event.
- Read the Tabloids: German Church Records
- Boost your Germanic Research: Understanding Jurisdictions
- Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of German Military Records
- Hunting For Henry: A Case Study Using Collaterals
Description of Presentations by Teresa Steinkamp McMillin
READ THE TABLOIDS: GERMAN CHURCH RECORDS
German church records are a key resource for determining our ancestors' family
relationships. Sometimes these records deliver extra information that was not
required. In these instances, they read similar to modem tabloids.
BOOST YOUR GERMANIC RESEARCH: UNDERSTAND HISTORICAL JURISDICTIONS
Meyer's Gazetteer helps determine jurisdictions as of 1912. Germany was
not a country until 1871. In the centuries prior to that, land areas were
constantly changing hands. One must understand who controlled a given
area to find all possible records.
LIFE. LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF GERMAN MILITARY RECORDS
Learn how to find if military records exist for your ancestors. Once relevant
jurisdictions are known for their town, strategies are discussed for finding
military records in the Family History Library and in German archives
are known, strategies are discussed for learning if military records
exist.
HUNTING FOR HENRY: A CASE STUDY USING COLLATERALS
Are you dealing with ancestors who seem to have been hatched? Did they land
in the middle of the United States with no obvious way of getting here?
Expanding your research to associates and neighbors can lead to their origins.
Pre-Registration has ended.
